EARS
Make 2, use white yarn
Ear 1:
R1: MR, 6sc (6)
R2: (2sc, inc) x 2 (8)
R3: (3sc, inc) x 2 (10)
R4: (4sc, inc) x 2 (12)
Fasten off, cut the yarn and weave it in.
Ear 2: crochet same as ear 1, but do not cut the yarn. We will connect two ears together and make the body (pic 1).

BODY
R1: we are now at the end of R4 of ear2. Ch2, connect with ear1 with 1sc, continue crocheting 11sc left on ear1, 2sc on chain, 12sc on ear2. I didn’t crochet 2 more sc on the chain and placed a stitch marker here to mark the last stitch of R1. There should be 28sc for R1 (12sc x 2 ears + 2sc on chain x 2) (pic 2).
R2-3 (2 rounds): 28sc (28)
R4: (3sc, inc) x 7 (35)
R5-8 (4 rounds): 35sc (35)
R9: (4sc, inc) x 7 (42)
Insert the eyes between R5 and R6, 5 stitches apart.
Stuff the ears and the body, and continue to stuff as you go.
R10-15 (6 rounds): 42sc (42)
R16: (4sc, dec) x 7 (35)
R17: (3sc, dec) x 7 (28)
R18: (2sc, dec) x 7 (21)
R19: (sc, dec) x 7 (14)
R20: 7dec (7)
Fasten off, cut the yarn, close the remaining gap and weave the yarn in (pic 3).

TAIL
Use white yarn
R1: MR, 6sc (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x 3 (9)
R3: (2sc, inc) x 3 (12)
R4: (3sc, inc) x 3 (15)
R5: (4sc, inc) x 3 (18)
R6: 18sc (18)
Do not stuff the tail.
Fasten off, cut the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing (pic 4).
Sew the tail between
R14 and R17 of the body.
Tip: Flatten the tail horizontally when sewing (pic 5).

LEAF
Use green yarn
Leave a long tail of yarn before making R1
R1: MR, 8sc (8)
R2: 8inc (16)
R3: (sc, inc) x 8 (24)
R4: 10sc, hdc-inc, dc-inc, hdc-inc, 11sc (27)
Fasten off, cut the yarn and leave a long tail to wrap around the wire later. Now we have 2 yarn tails (pic 6).
– Twist the end of the wire to form a small loop as shown in pic 6.
– Turn the leaf over to the wrong side, thread the yarn that we set aside earlier – before starting to crochet the leaf – through the loop of the wire (pic 7).
– Then wrap the yarn around the wire all the way to the edge of the leaf (pic 8).
– Continue using the second yarn end that we set aside when finishing the leaf, and wrap it around the wire until it’s fully covered.
– Use glue to secure the yarn to the wire (pic 9).
– Insert the leaf we just finished into one side of Totoro’s body.
