Learning to crochet is an exciting journey, but it can also be confusing for many people right from the start: choosing the right type of yarn. The market offers countless types of yarn with varying materials, thicknesses, colors, and prices. If you don’t choose correctly, you might struggle to learn, easily get discouraged, and give up quickly. Therefore, today I will share with you how to choose the right yarn for beginners, so you can grasp some basic yarn selection tips that will make your crochet learning journey much easier and more enjoyable.
Which type of yarn should you choose when you’re just starting out?
If you’re a beginner, remember these four tips:
1. Choose yarn that’s easy to crochet (avoid yarn that’s too slippery or too fuzzy)
Recommended: Medium-thick yarn (medium or slightly thick): easy to see stitches, easy to undo mistakes.
Examples: Cotton milk yarn, acrylic yarn, cotton-polyester blend yarn, Korean yarn, medium-thickness Turkish yarn. Smooth yarn, without fuzz or fraying, allows you to clearly see each stitch – very important for beginners.
Avoid: Shaggy yarn, smooth velvet yarn (like chenille, velvet) – makes it difficult to see the stitches. Yarn that is too thin – easily tangles and takes longer to complete the product.
2. Choose the right needle
Each type of yarn usually has a recommended needle size on the label because yarn and crochet hooks always come together. If you choose yarn without paying attention to the needle size, you may end up with stitches that are too tight or too loose.
Usually, the yarn label will suggest the appropriate needle size. However, for beginners, you can choose a slightly larger needle to allow for more open stitches, making it easier to work with.
Example: 3mm medium-thickness yarn – use a 3.0–4.0 mm needle.
If you’re new to crochet, choose a needle 0.5mm larger than recommended → this will make the stitches looser and easier to manipulate.
3. Color (prioritize light, easy-to-see colors)
Light colors (white, beige, light pink, mint green) are easier to see stitches than dark colors. Avoid dark yarn or ombre yarn – it’s hard to spot stitch errors.
4. By purpose:
Stuffed animals: milk cotton
Scarves, shirts: cotton blend or acrylic
Bags, decor: 100% cotton or paracord
5. No need to buy expensive yarn
Many people think that you need high-quality yarn to make a beautiful product. But in reality, when you’re just starting out, you don’t need to invest too much in expensive yarn.
Start with moderately priced yarn to practice your skills. Once you’re more experienced and understand the technique, you can upgrade to higher-quality yarn to make more beautiful products.
Choosing yarn may seem simple, but it plays an extremely important role for beginners learning crochet. Simply choosing the right type of yarn – soft, easy to look at, and the right thickness – will make learning to crochet much easier and more enjoyable.
These are my experiences and tips to help beginners choose the right yarn. Remember, it doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive; the most important thing is patience and the joy in each stitch. Once you get the hang of it, you can freely explore different types of yarn and create unique products with your own personal touch. Happy crocheting!
